The 3 T’s Mandate to Global Industry

I recently joined a panel at K2025, the world’s leading fair for plastics representing SGP Partnership. The topic was urgent: From Awareness to Action: Making Circularity Everyone’s Business.

The executive discussion keeps hitting the same wall. We have the technology, the smart materials, the money. But the system stalls. Why? Because the failure of the circular economy is not a technical problem. It is a behavioral one.

We don’t need another technological breakthrough. The blueprint is already operational within SGP-certified facilities. My mandate to the global panel was simple: Shift focus from the material science to human behavior. The answer is the scalable framework we pioneered at SGP: the 3 T’s of Circular Engagement.

1. Trust: The Social Element

50% of consumers distrust the recycling process. This is a massive failure of building coalitions. When the public feels tricked, their inevitable contamination of recycling streams (errors in sorting) kills the efficiency and the economics of the whole system.

Trust is the operational discipline that guarantees long-term value.

SGP-certified leaders help rebuild this by inviting accountability. They go beyond compliance to implement transparent waste tracking and community engagement. For example, a facility in Missouri shares its performance data and secures a third-party audit; this action builds the social capital that makes the system resilient.

2. Transparency: The Data Element

In high-tech, transparency means a digital product passport. But in print and many industries the materials don’t carry a digital identity. So how can we be transparent? We can shift focus from the product to the system.

True transparency requires an auditable trail of decisions. SGP facilities use the SMS framework to track material sourcing, energy use and ink recovery. This system-level reporting gives executives the business acumen to manage risk, measure impact and prove their circular claims.

It’s not about sharing everything. It’s about sharing what matters and being able to prove it instantly.

3. Triviality: Making the Right Choice the Default

If your circular solution requires a memo or a multi-step form, it’s already failed.

Triviality requires recognizing human nature, that we default to convenience. The most successful facilities design workflows so that sustainable choices require the least effort.

  • Default to pre-approved recycled materials.
  • Automate ink recovery and energy tracking.
  • Make waste sorting intuitive and highly visible.

This is the power of triviality: making the right choice the effortless choice for employees, for customers and for the communities we serve.

We Did It & Let’s Share It

This isn’t theory. Our SGP certified facilities are leading the world’s industries on this.

REI Co-op offers a compelling example of circular engagement in action. Their REI Printing Graphic Services is SGP certified and their Re/Supply program—a sophisticated trade-in and resale initiative for used gear embodies the 3 T’s. The process is trivial, with an intuitive trade-in experience; it’s grounded in transparency, offering clear valuation and resale criteria; and it builds lasting trust by reinforcing REI’s commitment to sustainability. It’s not just a compliance story but a revenue-generating model that proves behavioral design can drive both impact and loyalty.

While the K2025 event shared incredible advancements in innovative materials, manufacturing efficiency and better recycling systems, all critical to our sustainable supply chain, it was a privilege for SGP to sit at the table as a key customer. It’s reassuring to know the base products used in the print value chain are constantly evolving, but it was essential that we contributed the missing piece of the circular economy- the necessary human effort.

SGP certified leaders are proving that the universal framework for sustainable growth is behavioral, not technical. We have the blueprint for results driven change.

Let’s help fix the human element. The operational discipline of trust, transparency and triviality is the mandate SGP leaders can deliver to the world.

A Call to Action for the SGP Community

Your standards are inspiration for a global standard. We’ve developed the tools, the systems and the discipline to achieve circularity on the ground.

Lead the coalition. We need every SGP-certified facility to share the 3 T’s in your next customer meeting, industry panel or local municipality discussion. Show them what operational excellence truly looks like. Let’s use our success as the engine for broader community and industrial transformation and more sustainable future.
